‘Oh, nooooo! Not again!’ I cried out, stark naked before my bathroom mirror. It was dawn on a Sunday morning last May, and I’d been up all night writing. I’d planned on hitting the shower but was instead hit by the horrifying sight of my suddenly lopsided-looking torso—specifically, my breasts, which now appeared to be scarily asymmetrical. Without any warning, trauma, or sensation, one of my implants had simply gone whoosh, its saline solution draining into my body. My right breast had dwindled down to a third of what it had been only the day before, to about an A cup, while the left one remained rounded and full, still a perfect B. The implant’s outer shell—thin silicone rubber very similar to that of orthopedic joint replacements and pacemaker covers—must have perforated. But how? By poking a hole in itself? By a voodoo pinpricking? At least no mystery surrounded the saline’s exit: The sterile salt water, no different from that found in a medical IV, would flush out through my kidneys. Such indignity—the last of my right boob going down the loo!
J’ADORE: LEILA MICHAELA CUSHION CABOCHON RING —
Leila Michaela, a new fine jewelry line designed by sisters Karina and Arabella Rufino (the latter of whom does PR for Stella McCartney), unveiled their debut collection of made-to-order vintage-inspired gems at a private trunk show on Friday.  ELLE’s own Joann Pailey hosted, with W’s Karla Martinez, and a host of guests admired the cabochon cocktail rings, chunky link bracelets, and Deco-inspired gems, all of which evoked the glamour and polished sophistication of a bygone era.  And, at a range of startlingly reasonable prices, there are more than a few pieces to add to your holiday wish list.

This recent headline from a fashion trade scared the crap out of me: The Nineties are Back! It wasn’t that I was weary of our slow bounce back from recession (if in fact we really are) or afraid of the high unemployment rate still plaguing our country or, on the fashion front, all those Belgian designer-inspired longer hemlines and chunkier shoes I saw coming down the runways for spring. It was something else: For the first time since I’ve started working in this industry twenty years ago, I’ve witnessed the recycling of a style generation I’ve already lived. Frivolous to some, I know, but it still struck a chord.
